Ronnie O'Sullivan delivered a masterclass performance during the opening session of his World Snooker Championship semi-final against John Higgins, establishing a commanding four-frame advantage at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The seven-time world champion looked sharp from the outset, showcasing the kind of clinical form that has made him the favourite for another historic title run.

The match began with O'Sullivan asserting immediate dominance, winning the first three frames without allowing Higgins any meaningful opportunities. His break-building was exceptional, recording efforts of 78, 94, and 67 as he cruised to an early 3-0 lead. Higgins, a four-time world champion in his own right, managed to claim the fourth frame but appeared increasingly frustrated with his inability to match O'Sullivan's intensity.

O'Sullivan continued his relentless assault in the evening's second segment, extending his lead to 5-1 before Higgins managed to stage a minor fightback. The Scotsman won two consecutive frames to reduce the deficit, but O'Sullivan quickly reasserted control, taking the final frame of the session with a composed 71-break to cement his 7-3 advantage.

Speaking after the session, O'Sullivan remained characteristically reserved about his position. "John is a tremendous competitor and he's more than capable of coming back. I just need to focus on my own game and keep executing when opportunities arise." The pair will return for the second session on Thursday evening, with O'Sullivan requiring just 10 more frames to secure his place in the final.

Higgins acknowledged the scale of the challenge ahead, stating: "Ronnie was superb today. I need to be much sharper in the next session or I'll find myself too far behind to recover." The winner of this semi-final will face either Judd Trump or Marco Fu in the final, with both players set to begin their last-four clash later this week.
