O'Reilly ruled out for England as Ngumoha called up and Konsa expected in squad

Nico O'Reilly has been ruled out of England's Nations League match against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, while Ezri Konsa is expected to be included in the squad, BBC Sport reported. Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha has been called up as O'Reilly's replacement following the defender's absence from Monday's training session.

O'Reilly and Konsa were the only England players who did not take part in the squad's Monday morning session, instead working on individual programmes. Both had completed the full match in Saturday's 3-2 defeat by Spain. The BBC's updated report confirmed O'Reilly would miss the Czech Republic game, but did not specify the nature of the problem or provide a timetable for his return.

Ngumoha's call-up follows his omission from the matchday squad against Spain. Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall is another player whose opportunity could be affected by O'Reilly's absence, with BBC Sport identifying him as a possible option at left-back. No starting role was confirmed for Hall in the report, and Konsa's expected inclusion in the squad does not itself confirm a place in the starting line-up.

Konsa has been a regular selection under Thomas Tuchel, starting seven of England's eight matches at the 2026 World Cup. Against Spain, Jarrad Branthwaite replaced Marc Guehi late in the game. England had recovered from falling behind to move 2-1 ahead, before Harry Kane missed a penalty and Spain scored twice to secure the victory. O'Reilly's error led to Alex Baena scoring Spain's equaliser.

Tuchel said England had demonstrated their playing identity and courage against Spain despite individual errors contributing to the defeat. In comments carried by BBC Sport, he maintained that his players had helped produce a high-quality contest, while acknowledging that they had created problems for themselves through mistakes. He also said the team had been encouraged to play in their preferred way.

The squad update comes during an international window featuring four England matches in 11 days. Tuchel has expressed concern about the demands of the format, citing travel, limited recovery time and changes between club and international training. He said he felt those adjustments could increase injury risks, rather than reduce them.
