O'Neill cites under-21 progress in Eoin Kenny's Northern Ireland call-up
Michael O'Neill says Eoin Kenny's under-21 performances earned his place in Northern Ireland's senior squad. The manager wants to assess the Portsmouth attacker despite his limited Championship playing time.

Michael O'Neill says Eoin Kenny earned his Northern Ireland senior call-up through his performances at under-21 level, rather than any consideration of his family's international connections. According to BBC Sport's reporting on November 3, the manager wants to assess the 20-year-old Portsmouth attacker directly after receiving a positive recommendation from under-21 coach Tommy Wright.

Watch the highlights:

Kenny is the son of Stephen Kenny, who managed the Republic of Ireland from 2020 to 2023. Born in Northern Ireland while his father was in charge of Derry City, he represented the Republic at under-19 level before moving into Northern Ireland's under-21 set-up. He has made 11 appearances for Wright's team and captained the side against Greece last month.

In comments reported by BBC Sport, O'Neill said that Kenny's background had not driven his decision and that the player's strong under-21 campaign justified an opportunity with the senior group. He said he had not spoken to Stephen Kenny before making the selection. Wright's assessment had been important, with the under-21 manager offering positive feedback both on the attacker's performances and on his character.

The call-up follows Kenny's summer move from Dundalk to Portsmouth. He has made one Championship appearance for his new club, and O'Neill acknowledged that playing time had been difficult to secure. Bringing him into camp gives the Northern Ireland staff an opportunity to work with him now, instead of waiting for a longer run of appearances at club level before making their assessment.

O'Neill also linked the decision to the wider progression of Northern Ireland's young players. He said it was important for members of the under-21 squad to see that senior opportunities were available, noting that too many players' international careers had ended at the younger age group. Kenny's selection gives the staff a chance to evaluate that next step through training together.

Northern Ireland's November Nations League programme includes a home match against Ukraine on November 14 and an away fixture against Hungary on November 17. Those matches provide the setting for Kenny's introduction to the senior squad, although O'Neill's explanation focused on observing him in camp rather than promising an appearance. The selection adds a senior opportunity to a year that has already brought a club move and under-21 captaincy.
