Oman have reached the Gulf Cup semi-finals after a drawing of lots broke a group-stage deadlock with Iraq. BBC Sport reported that organisers resorted to the tournament's final tie-breaker because the teams remained inseparable under the qualifying criteria. The decision gave Oman second place in Group A behind hosts Saudi Arabia and ended Iraq's campaign.

The stalemate followed contrasting results in Tuesday's final group matches. Oman recovered from a one-goal deficit to beat Kuwait 3-1, while Saudi Arabia defeated Iraq 2-0 in Jeddah. Gulf News reported that those results left Oman and Iraq with four points apiece, with Saudi Arabia completing the group on nine. Oman's victory had therefore kept them in contention without settling qualification on the pitch.

The details of the teams' records explain why the usual separators were insufficient. According to Goal's report, Oman and Iraq had drawn their opening meeting 1-1 and each finished the group with four goals scored and five conceded. They also collected eight yellow cards each and neither received a red, leaving no difference in their disciplinary records to resolve the contest for second place.

Discipline became particularly significant during Oman's win. BBC Sport reported that Musab Al-Shaqsy was booked for removing his shirt while celebrating his team's third goal. The organisers said the regulations required them to consider head-to-head results, goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary points before drawing lots. With none of those measures separating the sides, the last available criterion determined who advanced.

It also described confusion immediately after the matches: Oman's players were initially told they had qualified and Iraq's were told they were out. Oman's selection completed Group A's semi-final line-up alongside Saudi Arabia. Iraq were eliminated despite having beaten Kuwait 3-2 earlier in the group, Gulf News reported. Oman will face the team finishing first in Group B, with their route into the knockout stage ultimately secured away from the field after their comeback against Kuwait.
