Olly Stone takes six wickets as Nottinghamshire beat Hampshire to stay in title hunt

Nottinghamshire defeated Hampshire by 54 runs at Trent Bridge to remain four points behind County Championship Division One leaders Somerset with two rounds remaining. Olly Stone finished with second-innings figures of 6-28 and nine wickets in the match, according to the ECB Reporters’ Network report published by BBC Sport. The reigning champions collected 22 points, while Hampshire took four.

The final morning began with Nottinghamshire requiring four wickets and Hampshire needing another 117 runs. Hampshire added only seven before Stone struck twice in a maiden over. Wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay made a diving, one-handed catch to dismiss 18-year-old Ben Mayes for 25, and Eddie Jack fell to the second ball he faced. Stone then trapped Kyle Abbott lbw with a yorker, bringing Nottinghamshire within one wicket of victory.

Scott Currie and debutant Manny Lumsden prolonged the contest, keeping the last-wicket partnership intact for 20 overs. Their resistance ended when substitute fielder Ben Martindale caught Lumsden at point for 21, seven minutes into a delayed lunch. Currie was unbeaten on 44 as Hampshire were dismissed for 123. Stone’s latest performance took his tally over his past four matches to 25 wickets at an average of 12.48.

Nottinghamshire’s first-innings 377 had been built around Joe Clarke’s 105 and Liam Patterson-White’s 92. Hampshire replied with 304, including an unbeaten 133 from Jake Lehmann, before Lumsden claimed 5-36 to help dismiss the hosts for 104 in their second innings. Behind the stumps, Hampshire’s Ben Brown took 10 catches across the match, equalling the county record for wicketkeeping dismissals, while Hay claimed seven catches on his Championship debut.

The result leaves Nottinghamshire one point above Warwickshire in a closely contested title race. Their remaining fixtures are away to Sussex and at home to Yorkshire, with the latter match beginning on 24 September. Somerset visit Yorkshire before hosting Surrey, while Warwickshire’s final two opponents are Essex and Leicestershire.

Hampshire face a different calculation at the bottom of the table: they are 32 points behind eighth-placed Essex with matches against Leicestershire away and Sussex at home still to play. They have occupied a relegation place since 27 April, according to the report. After avoiding relegation by a single point on the last day of the previous season, they now need to make up a substantial deficit to preserve their Division One status.
