The ECB Reporters Network, in a match report carried by BBC Sport, said Surrey were dismissed for 162 after losing their final eight wickets for 87 runs. That total left the home side 22 runs behind Nottinghamshire's first-innings score of 184, completing a sharp recovery for the visitors after they had slipped to 104-8 on the opening day.
Stone changed the course of Surrey's innings after Rory Burns and Adam Thomas had put on 59. Burns made 44 before upper-cutting Stone to deep backward point, while Ollie Pope fell for a five-ball duck in the same over. Thomas, dropped twice during his innings, top-scored with 48 before Stone bowled him through the gate. Debutant Mahipal Lomror then edged his first ball to slip, giving Stone his fifth wicket.
Dillon Pennington removed Ben Foakes for 12 and Jordan Clark for four, while Liam Patterson-White dismissed substitute Josh Blake. Stone returned to complete his six-wicket haul by bowling Tom Lawes for 18. The 32-year-old fast bowler produced the decisive spell on the ground where he made the most recent of his five Test appearances for England in September 2024.
Surrey struck early in Nottinghamshire's second innings when Dan Worrall bowled captain Haseeb Hameed for four. Ben Slater and Freddie McCann added 49 before McCann was caught behind for 22, and Worrall later removed Slater for 37. Joe Clarke and Jack Haynes then stopped further damage, sharing an unbeaten 70-run stand across the final 20 overs.
Clarke ended the day unbeaten on 37, with Nottinghamshire having scored 147 from 45 overs in the extended evening session. Surrey remain within reach if they can take early wickets on day three, but Nottinghamshire hold the advantage in a meeting between the competition's last two champions. Both teams collected three points from the match's first two days.
