Olise scores twice as France overturn Belgium lead in 4-1 win
France overturned a first-half deficit to beat Belgium 4-1 at the Stade de France on Monday, October 5, with Michael Olise scoring twice after coming off the bench. UEFA reported that all four French goals arrived in a 14-minute burst, preserving the team's unbeaten record in Nations League Group A1.
Watch the highlights:
Dodi Lukébakio had put Belgium ahead before the interval. According to AS USA's live match coverage, Roméo Lavia supplied the pass for the opening goal on a counterattack, with Lukébakio finishing from outside the penalty area. France went into half-time trailing despite earlier efforts from Bradley Barcola and Estéban Lepaul that Maarten Vandevoordt saved.
Zinedine Zidane changed his attack in the second half, introducing Olise for Ousmane Dembélé and Rayan Cherki for Maghnes Akliouche. Lucas da Cunha also came on, followed later by Désiré Doué in place of Barcola. AS USA's account recorded saves from Olise and Cherki before France finally found the equaliser through Doué's shot from outside the box.
Cherki then put France ahead from an Olise assist. Olise followed with two goals of his own, both set up by Doué, turning the narrow lead into a three-goal winning margin. The substitutions supplied every French scorer, with Doué, Cherki and Olise completing the turnaround after Belgium had led for much of the match.
Speaking after the game, Zidane praised his players' attitude and their contributions throughout the international gathering, according to AS. He acknowledged the difficulties France had faced and said the team had lacked precision in the final attacking metres before correcting matters after the break. He also pointed to the quality of the players introduced from the bench.
The win kept France unbeaten in the group on a night when Italy also came through a test against Türkiye. UEFA reported that Italy won 3-1 in Bologna and moved into second place in Group A1. For France, the decisive development was the contribution of the substitutes, who transformed a losing position into a comfortable final score.
