Former Oklahoma State Star Ehrhard Makes Immediate Impact with OKC Comets in Triple-A Debut
Zach Ehrhard drove in the Comets only run and recorded their lone stolen base in his first Triple-A game, living up to organizational expectations in a 3-1 loss to Albuquerque.

Zach Ehrhard wasted no time making his presence felt in his Triple-A debut, delivering exactly the type of performance that has generated significant buzz throughout the Los Angeles Dodgers organization since his arrival.

The 23-year-old outfielder went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk, and the game's only stolen base as the Oklahoma City Comets fell 3-1 to the Albuquerque Isotopes in Friday night's season opener at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. While the result wasn't what the home team wanted, Ehrhard's contributions validated the optimism surrounding his rapid ascension through the minor league system.

Comets manager Scott Hennessey had been hearing about Ehrhard long before the season began, with spring training reports consistently highlighting both his on-field ability and character. "We got to spring training — everyone's just loving the kid," Hennessey explained. "How hard he plays, how good of a teammate he is. He's lived up to that."

The former Oklahoma State standout's journey to Triple-A represents a remarkable rise through professional baseball's ranks. Originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 13th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Paul R. Wharton High School in Tampa, Florida, Ehrhard declined that opportunity to play college baseball for the Cowboys.

That decision proved prescient as Ehrhard flourished in Stillwater, culminating in a stellar senior season that featured a .330 batting average, .458 on-base percentage, 14 home runs, and 57 RBIs. His comprehensive offensive production caught the attention of major league scouts, with the Red Sox selecting him in the fourth round of the 2024 draft.

However, Ehrhard's path took another turn when Boston traded him to the Dodgers on July 31st. The change of organizations hasn't slowed his development, as evidenced by his strong showing with Double-A Tulsa, where he posted a .282 batting average and .391 on-base percentage in 34 games.

Friday's debut showcased the versatility and intelligence that make Ehrhard such an intriguing prospect. Batting second in the lineup and playing center field, he drove in OKC's lone run in the first inning while demonstrating the aggressive baserunning that adds another dimension to his game.

"I think it's been good," Ehrhard reflected on his professional journey. "I think it's just continuing to be who I am and not try to do too much. I think things have gone well, obviously. From last year, I had a pretty good year, and then this year, I just want to continue to drill on who I am."

Hennessey sees significant potential in the 5-foot-9, 190-pound outfielder, particularly valuing his versatility and baseball acumen. "Developmentally, we have to put him in all three outfield spots so when he does get to the big leagues he's ready to go," the manager explained. "Where we hit him in the lineup, he's gonna hit at the top of the lineup."

The intangible qualities that Ehrhard brings have impressed organizational evaluators as much as his statistical production. "The thing, it's just the intangibles with him, and he's a winning-type player," Hennessey noted. "That's what the Dodgers love about him. He's going to be a good player for a long time."

Playing in Oklahoma City adds special significance to Ehrhard's current assignment, as he returns to a state where he became a star at the collegiate level. "It's really cool," Ehrhard said. "There's a lot of local support. A lot of people remember me from school."

The faith that Hennessey has in Ehrhard extends beyond mere potential. "First off, this guy is so prepared," the manager emphasized. "He works hard every day in all facets of his game. Leader. Can play all three outfield spots. Puts together good at-bats. And he's a winner."

For Ehrhard, reaching Triple-A represents another step toward his ultimate goal while maintaining the perspective that has guided his journey. "All I can say is I have so much gratitude," he said. "It's been a blessing truly from God. God has blessed this whole path for me."

While Friday's loss wasn't the ideal start to the season, both Ehrhard and his manager see positive signs for what lies ahead. The combination of talent, work ethic, and character that brought Ehrhard to this level suggests his Triple-A debut may be just the beginning of his impact with the Comets.
