Oklahoma Freshman Sensation Aaliyah Chavez Leads Sooners Against Top-Seeded South Carolina in Sweet 16
The 5-foot-10 guard averages 18.3 points per game and scored 26 points with 15 in overtime during their previous upset victory over the Gamecocks in January.

Oklahoma women basketball program pins their Sweet 16 hopes on freshman sensation Aaliyah Chavez when the fourth-seeded Sooners face top-ranked South Carolina in Saturday evening showdown at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

Chavez has emerged as one of the nation premier first-year players, leading Oklahoma in scoring while demonstrating the poise and productivity that made her a consensus top-three recruit in the Class of 2025.

The 5-foot-10 guard from Lubbock, Texas, has started all 33 games for the Sooners while averaging a team-leading 18.3 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per contest. Her 32.1 minutes per game reflect the trust coach Jennie Baranczyk places in her young star.

Chavez credentials extend far beyond basic statistics, as she earned All-SEC second team and SEC All-Freshman team recognition while shooting 37.6 percent from the field and 30.7 percent from three-point range throughout her debut campaign.

Her most impressive performance came against the very opponent Oklahoma faces Saturday, when the Sooners shocked top-ranked South Carolina with a 94-82 overtime victory on January 22. Chavez delivered a masterful display with a game-high 26 points, four rebounds, and eight assists in that stunning upset.

The freshman excellence reached extraordinary levels during overtime, where she scored 15 points on perfect 5-of-5 shooting to lead Oklahoma 19-9 overtime advantage that secured one of the season biggest upsets.

That performance demonstrated Chavez ability to rise to elite competition levels while maintaining composure under maximum pressure against the nation top-ranked team and defending national champions.

Chavez journey to Oklahoma began at Monterey High School in Lubbock, where she established herself as one of Texas premier players through dominant performances that earned national recognition.

She captured Texas Gatorade Player of the Year honors twice before claiming the national Gatorade Player of the Year award in 2025, cementing her status among the country elite high school talents.

Additional accolades included the prestigious Naismith High School Girls Player of the Year award in 2025, McDonald All-American selection, and Jordan Brand Classic participation. ESPN ranked her as the third-best prospect in her recruiting class.

Her recruitment attracted attention from elite programs across the country, with Oklahoma ultimately prevailing over finalists Texas, Texas Tech, UCLA, LSU, and South Carolina. The fact that Dawn Staley personally recruited Chavez adds intrigue to Saturday matchup.

Chavez committed to Oklahoma in March 2025, choosing the Sooners over the opportunity to play for the defending national champions and other prestigious programs that pursued her services.

The freshman success has translated into significant off-court opportunities, including a Nike NIL deal signed before the season began and promotional partnerships with companies like Intuit and Planet Fitness.

Reports indicated Chavez had access to a 1.5 million dollar NIL package before making her college commitment, reflecting the marketability that accompanied her elite basketball skills.

Her development has benefited from the guidance of her father Sonny, who served as her trainer throughout her formative years, along with support from mother Andrea. This family foundation provided the structure necessary for reaching elite levels.

Saturday game against South Carolina represents Oklahoma biggest test of the season, as they face a 33-3 Gamecocks squad seeking redemption after their January defeat in Norman.

Chavez performance in that previous meeting gives Oklahoma confidence they can compete with anyone when their freshman star operates at peak efficiency. Her ability to score in bunches while facilitating for teammates makes her a matchup nightmare.

The 5:00 PM ET tip-off on ESPN will showcase whether Chavez can replicate her earlier heroics against South Carolina elite defense and whether Oklahoma can complete another stunning upset.

For Chavez, the Sweet 16 stage provides another opportunity to demonstrate why she was considered the crown jewel of Oklahoma recruiting class and continues establishing herself as one of college basketball brightest young stars.
