Oklahoma Baseball Jumps to No. 14 in Coaches Poll After Statement Series Win at Vanderbilt
Oklahoma baseball is heating up at just the right time. The Sooners climbed four spots to No. 14 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll released Monday, fresh off a series win against Vanderbilt on the road.
Winning two of three against a Commodores side that has been a fixture in the national rankings, the Sooners moved into the top 15 for the first time this season. Their 14th-place standing also makes them the sixth-highest ranked team in the SEC, one of college baseball's toughest conferences.
In the broader SEC picture, Oklahoma finds itself tied for ninth in the league standings alongside Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Tennessee. Notably, none of those teams were placed higher than the Sooners in Monday's poll, a sign of the respect Oklahoma has earned through a strong spring schedule.
Texas continues to lead the SEC charge at No. 4 nationally, though the Longhorns slipped two spots after dropping both games to Texas A&M over the weekend. The series finale was cancelled due to weather. Texas A&M, meanwhile, made the biggest move of any SEC team, vaulting eight places from No. 15 to No. 7.
Georgia held relatively steady at No. 5 despite dropping one spot, while Auburn sits just outside the top 10 at No. 11. Arkansas and Florida were the other big gainers in the SEC, rising five and six spots respectively to No. 17 and No. 18. Mississippi State took a significant hit, falling eight spots to No. 16 after slipping out of the top 10.
Ole Miss checked in at No. 23, giving the SEC 10 teams total in the national rankings. Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and LSU all received votes but missed out on a top-25 berth.
The Sooners have little time to rest on their ranking. They travel to Tulsa on Tuesday for a midweek clash with Oklahoma State before returning to Norman to host Missouri in a three-game set beginning Friday.
