Ohio State Women's Tennis Hunting Big Ten Title After Dominant Regular Season
The Ohio State women's tennis team is putting together a season to remember, and the Buckeyes are now firmly in position to finish what they started as the regular season winds toward its conclusion.
Sitting in a virtual tie for first place in the Big Ten Conference with just a single league loss on the year, Ohio State has shown the kind of consistent quality that separates championship contenders from the rest of the pack. The Scarlet and Gray have been particularly dominant on their home courts in Columbus, but their ability to win on the road has been just as impressive this spring.
The Buckeyes opened Big Ten play with authority, posting a commanding 4-0 victory over Iowa on January 26 and never really looking back. They followed that with another shutout against Virginia, and while a trip to face Georgia on outdoor courts in February resulted in their only conference defeat of the season, the team has since rebuilt momentum with a string of decisive wins.
The most recent stretch has been particularly commanding. Ohio State dispatched Michigan State 6-1 at home, blanked Michigan 4-0, swept Rutgers and Maryland both by 4-0 margins, and travelled to Ann Arbor to hand Michigan a 4-1 defeat. A 4-1 win over Nebraska on the road wrapped up that stretch in style.
There have been challenges along the way, including a tough 4-0 loss at Pepperdine that exposed some vulnerabilities on outdoor surfaces, but a 4-0 blanking of UCLA on the road showed this team can compete with the best programs in the country when firing on all cylinders.
Looking ahead, the Buckeyes still have regular season matches remaining against Purdue, Indiana, Oregon, and Washington, with each contest representing another opportunity to strengthen their position heading into the conference tournament. The schedule does not get any easier, but with the Big Ten title still firmly in reach, Ohio State appears well-equipped for the challenge ahead.
