Odegaard winner against Hull sends Arsenal into break with 27 points
Martin Odegaard's 72nd-minute goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over Hull City and a ninth league victory in 10 matches. Mikel Arteta called for greater efficiency in attack as his side entered the international break on top.

Martin Odegaard scored in the 72nd minute as Arsenal beat Hull City 1-0 at Emirates Stadium on Saturday to enter the international break as Premier League leaders. According to BBC Sport's reporting, the victory took Arsenal to 27 points from their opening 10 league matches, matching their best start under Mikel Arteta, achieved in the 2022-23 season.

Watch the highlights:

The captain finished from close range to settle a match in which Arsenal had earlier been denied a penalty following a video review. The result extended their winning run at home to 10 games across all competitions. Eight of those victories have come with clean sheets, while this was their 34th 1-0 win since Arteta took charge in 2019.

The first-half penalty incident involved Nobel Mendy pulling Kai Havertz's shirt. Referee Farai Hallam went to the pitchside monitor after intervention by video assistant referee Michael Oliver, but the review ultimately led to an offside decision against Havertz. Play resumed with a Hull free-kick, and Arsenal had to wait until well into the second half for their breakthrough.

Arteta subsequently identified finishing efficiency as an area for improvement. In comments reported by the BBC, he pointed to two one-on-one opportunities against the goalkeeper, along with blocked and deflected attempts. He also said his players were sometimes pursuing an ideal finish against opponents defending deep, and wanted them to be more pragmatic and score earlier to change the pattern of matches.

Arsenal's attacking options remain affected by Bukayo Saka's absence with a quadricep injury. The BBC also reported that Christos Tzolis and Havertz had suffered hamstring injuries while representing Greece and Germany respectively earlier in the season. Despite winning nine of their first 10 league games, Arsenal have not scored more than twice in a league fixture since their opening-day three-goal performance against Coventry City.

The Hull result nevertheless maintained a strong defensive record: Arsenal have the Premier League's best defence, according to the BBC, although they are the lowest-scoring side among the top four. Odegaard's decisive contribution ensured that another narrow victory added three points before the pause for international fixtures, with Arteta still seeking more consistent returns from his attack.
