Hurtré adds France debut goal to six-goal WSL start with Birmingham
Océane Hurtré has followed Birmingham’s promotion to the Women’s Super League with six goals in the club’s first eight league matches and a scoring debut for France. According to the Guardian’s report on Wednesday, the 22-year-old is joint second in the WSL scoring standings, with only Khadija Shaw ahead of her. She has also supplied two league assists for the promoted side.
Watch the highlights:
Hurtré scored once and provided an assist as France beat Latvia 9-0 last month, adding senior international recognition to her club form. Her start to the season had already earned September’s WSL player of the month award. Among the teams she has scored against for Birmingham are Arsenal, Brighton and Manchester City, following her move to England while the club was still in the second tier.
She joined Birmingham in the summer of 2025 and helped the team secure promotion. Head coach Amy Merricks told the Guardian that adapting to life in another country had required support in several areas. Merricks highlighted Hurtré’s work away from matches and her progress in learning English, describing the France call-up as a reward for the effort she had put into that transition.
Hurtré began her professional career at Paris Saint-Germain, where Olivier Echouafni gave her a debut at 16 during the club’s 2020-21 title-winning season. Her first appearance came in European competition against Polish club Gornik Leczna. Echouafni also recalled a late goalline clearance against Paris FC on her second league appearance in May 2021, shortly before PSG secured the championship.
Loans to Dijon in 2022 and Bordeaux in 2023-24 offered further opportunities, although injuries affected her playing time at both clubs. Sylvain Carric, who was Dijon’s women’s general manager when she arrived, told the Guardian that her left-footed delivery and ability to play several positions had attracted him. He identified left-back, winger and central midfield as roles she could fill.
Her senior France debut follows six years representing the country at youth level, including appearances at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica. For Birmingham, her current contribution is measurable in both goals and assists across the opening eight league games. For France, the Latvia performance has given her a first senior goal alongside the international opportunity earned during her strong start in England.
