O'Sullivan Builds Four-Frame Cushion After Day One of World Snooker Championship Semifinal
Ronnie O'Sullivan establishes a commanding position against John Higgins after the opening session of their World Snooker Championship semifinal, taking a 5-1 advantage.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has put himself in an almost insurmountable position after the first day of his World Snooker Championship semifinal against John Higgins, establishing a commanding 5-1 lead that leaves his veteran opponent with a mountain to climb if he is to reach the final. The seven-time champion was at his brilliant best throughout the opening session, compiling breaks of 127, 89, and 74 as he dismantled Higgins' challenge with clinical efficiency. O'Sullivan's safety play was particularly impressive, forcing Higgins into mistakes from which he could capitalise immediately. The Rocket appeared focused and determined, showing none of the distraction that has sometimes characterized his recent performances. Higgins, who has reached this stage of the competition with impressive victories over Liang Wenbo and Ben Woollaston, looked rattled by O'Sullivan's relentless approach and struggled to gain any momentum. The second session resumes on Sunday morning, and while Higgins will hope to reduce the deficit, O'Sullivan's experience suggests he will be extremely difficult to overhaul. The winner of this semifinal will face the survivor of the Mark Selby versus Kyren Wilson match in the final, which begins on May 3rd. O'Sullivan is seeking to become the oldest World Snooker Champion in history, having already broken the record for most titles at the Crucible Theatre with his seventh triumph in 2022.
