NRL Grants Jai Arrow Special Return to Reach 100 Rabbitohs Games

The National Rugby League has approved special arrangements that will allow Jai Arrow to make two brief appearances for South Sydney Rabbitohs and reach 100 games for the club. BBC Sport reported that the 31-year-old, who retired in May after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, will take part in the opening seconds of the Rabbitohs’ final two regular-season fixtures.

Arrow will lead South Sydney onto the field in full kit before starting each match. He will then leave the field as the Rabbitohs’ first interchange and remain on the bench. The NRL has permitted South Sydney to name an additional player on its team list and use an extra interchange, ensuring the arrangement does not reduce the club’s normal playing resources.

The first appearance is scheduled for Saturday away to the Gold Coast Titans. South Sydney then hosts the Sydney Roosters on September 4, when Arrow is expected to record his 100th Rabbitohs game. The plan takes him from the 98 appearances he had made for the club before his immediate retirement.

Arrow joined the Rabbitohs in 2021 after earlier spells with the Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast. Across a 10-year NRL career, he played 178 games for the three clubs. He also represented Queensland 12 times in State of Origin, adding a significant representative record to his club career.

Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly said the club was grateful to those who helped accommodate its request. According to the BBC report, Solly described Arrow’s response to his diagnosis as inspirational and said the two appearances would allow him to complete an important milestone while returning to the field in front of the rugby league community.

Motor neurone disease affects nerves in the brain and spinal cord that control muscles, causing them to weaken and stiffen over time. It can affect movement, speech, eating and breathing. Arrow’s carefully managed return is therefore a ceremonial exception rather than a reversal of his retirement, with the approved rules limiting his involvement to the beginning of each match before he is replaced.
