Nottinghamshire title defence ends despite Stone five-for against Yorkshire

Nottinghamshire's hopes of retaining the County Championship ended on day two against Yorkshire, even as Olly Stone's five-wicket haul helped them establish a strong position at Trent Bridge. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport, Warwickshire's bonus points against Leicestershire made it mathematically impossible for the defending champions to catch them in the final round.

The gap between the sides had been 15 points before this round. Warwickshire collected three batting bonus points at Edgbaston, while Nottinghamshire managed only one, taking the title beyond the 2025 champions' reach. Nottinghamshire nevertheless finished the day with a chance to close their campaign with victory: they were 55-3 in their second innings, leading Yorkshire by 127 runs with seven wickets remaining.

Stone was central to that advantage, taking 5-51 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 179 in response to Nottinghamshire's 251. The England fast bowler reached 50 first-class wickets in a season for the first time and recorded his fifth haul of at least five wickets this campaign, another personal best. Thirty-four of those wickets have come in his last six matches.

There was uncertainty over Stone's fitness, however. After dismissing Ben Cliff for his fifth wicket and completing the over, he left the field. The report said he did not appear to be in obvious discomfort, but Nottinghamshire subsequently announced that Tom Giles had replaced him as an injury substitute. The report did not identify the injury.

Yorkshire's reply had faltered early, with Stone removing openers Will Luxton and Adam Lyth before later dismissing James Wharton and Jonny Bairstow. George Hill provided the main resistance with 58, sharing a ninth-wicket partnership of 47 with Cliff. Hill reached his sixth half-century of the season from 46 balls, hitting six fours and a six, and took his season's run aggregate to a personal-best 744 before being stumped off Liam Patterson-White.

Yorkshire's seamers then struck back with the new ball. Nottinghamshire lost Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater with nine runs on the board, and Joe Clarke's dismissal left them 24-3. Jack Haynes, unbeaten on 30, and Ben Martindale prevented further losses before bad light ended play early. Fourteen wickets had fallen during the day, leaving Nottinghamshire ahead in the match but no longer in contention for the championship.
