Northern Stuns Top-Ranked Allegany with Dramatic 10-Inning Victory
In a game that embodied everything great about high school baseball, fourth-ranked Northern pulled off a stunning 5-4 victory over top-ranked Allegany in a 10-inning thriller that will be remembered for years to come in the Western Maryland Athletic Conference.
The drama reached its peak in the bottom of the 10th inning when Northern's Elliott Myers-Shirer drew a walk with the bases loaded, pushing across the winning run as darkness began to settle over the field. It was a fitting end to an epic battle that featured clutch pitching, timely hitting, and enough twists to leave both dugouts emotionally drained.
"It was a heck of a game," said Northern coach Phil Carr. "There were situations where both of us could have won the game, then both of us gave the other team the opportunity to get it tied. We were running out of daylight, but didn't have a clock. You just keep grinding and keep playing, and we found a way today."
The contest appeared headed for an Allegany victory when Cole Ricker delivered a crucial two-run single in the ninth inning, giving the Campers a 4-2 lead. But Northern refused to surrender, scratching across one run before benefiting from baseball's most dramatic play - a dropped third strike that allowed the tying run to score.
The pitching matchup between two All-Area first-teamers from a season ago lived up to expectations. Northern's Landon Yoder was masterful through eight and one-third innings, working efficiently and locating his pitches against a dangerous Allegany lineup that had been swinging hot bats. His counterpart, Kohen Madden, struck out 11 batters in six strong innings for the Campers.
"Landon was really good against a team that's been hot swinging the bat," Carr noted. "He was locating really well today."
Jake Chambers was the offensive catalyst for Northern, going 3-for-3 and scoring twice while drawing three intentional walks as Allegany tried to neutralize his impact. Myers-Shirer contributed three RBIs, while Hunter Livengood's ninth-inning double helped set up the dramatic comeback.
For Allegany, Madden went 4-for-4 at the plate while handling pitching duties, showcasing the two-way talent that makes him special. The loss dropped the defending state champions to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Allegany coach Jon Irons saw positives despite the heartbreaking defeat. "It felt a little bit like a playoff game, and that's good experience for us," he said. "There were a ton of good lessons in this game today, and we had inexperienced kids getting experience in high-pressure situations."
The victory improved Northern to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the WestMAC, continuing their recent dominance in this premier conference rivalry. The teams have met in three of the last four Class 1A West Region I finals, establishing this as the conference's marquee matchup.
Both teams now face challenging schedules ahead, with Northern hosting Mountain Ridge on Monday while Allegany welcomes Clear Spring on Friday - a showdown between two of the last three state champions in Class 1A.
