Northern Ireland stand alone with perfect Nations League defensive record
Northern Ireland are the only team yet to concede in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League, BBC Sport reported on Monday. Michael O'Neill's side have opened their return to League B with three clean sheets, recording wins against Georgia and Ukraine either side of a goalless draw with Hungary.
Watch the highlights:
The latest victory was a 3-0 away success against Ukraine on Friday, October 2. Football Nation's match record lists Ciaron Brown as the scorer in the ninth and 61st minutes, with Isaac Price adding the second goal after 22 minutes. Northern Ireland therefore established a two-goal lead before half-time and extended it after the interval.
The match statistics underline the difference between having the ball and threatening the goal. Football Nation recorded 11 attempts for Ukraine against nine for Northern Ireland, but only two Ukrainian efforts were on target. Northern Ireland put three on target and scored three times. Ukraine also had seven corners to the visitors' one, without turning that advantage into a goal.
O'Neill used five substitutes after the third goal. Justin Devenny replaced Price in the 67th minute, while Patrick Kelly and Josh Magennis came on for Kieran Morrison and Jamie Donley ten minutes later. Paddy McNair and Ceadach O'Neill then replaced Tom Atcheson and Terry Devlin in the 84th minute, according to Football Nation's timeline.
BBC Sport reported that the defensive run has continued despite injuries to Daniel Ballard and Conor Bradley. Goalkeeper Pierce Charles was particularly important in Georgia, saving a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia penalty. Hungary subsequently managed only one shot on target, in stoppage time. Across the current and previous Nations League campaigns, Northern Ireland have seven clean sheets in nine matches.
O'Neill attributed the record to collective defending and players recovering quickly when possession is lost, rather than to the back line alone. Defender Trai Hume, also speaking to the BBC, pointed to familiarity with a system used for several years. He said that understanding extended beyond the starting side to players coming into the team.
