Northern Ireland stay top after Georgia draw completes unbeaten Nations League window
Northern Ireland remained top of Nations League Group B2 after a 0-0 draw with Georgia at Windsor Park on Monday completed an unbeaten four-match international window. According to BBC Sport, Michael O'Neill's side collected eight points in 11 days and secured their place in League B for at least another campaign, although a late penalty miss prevented a third victory.
Watch the highlights:
Isaac Price had his spot-kick saved as the hosts failed to find a breakthrough in Belfast. Paddy Kelly and Josh Magennis also had opportunities, while Ruairi McConville struck the crossbar during the incident that brought the penalty. The result followed another goalless home draw against Hungary, leaving Northern Ireland with two points from their two home matches during the window.
Their away results supplied the other six points. Northern Ireland won in Georgia and then beat Ukraine 3-0 in Slovakia, ending a wait for both a victory in the competition's second tier and an away win at any Nations League level. BBC Sport reported that the team's average age against Ukraine was just 22, underlining the youth of the squad delivering those results.
Four consecutive clean sheets accompanied that unbeaten run. Northern Ireland were, according to the BBC's report, the only team in the competition still to concede a goal. They achieved that record without Conor Bradley, while Daniel Ballard played only the opening match before a hamstring injury ruled him out of the remainder. Ciaron Brown started all four games in defence.
O'Neill used only 15 different starters across the condensed schedule. Alongside Ballard's injury, Ethan Galbraith's absence against Ukraine for the birth of his child accounted for enforced changes. McConville and Tom Atcheson featured among the young defensive options, while Kieran Morrison, Terry Devlin and Brodie Spencer also contributed against Ukraine. O'Neill praised the players' application and desire to succeed in comments reported by BBC Sport.
Northern Ireland conclude their group campaign next month with a home match against Ukraine and a trip to Hungary. Promotion for a second successive Nations League campaign remains possible, as does a place among the second seeds for December's Euro 2028 qualifying draw. Neither outcome is secured, but their unbeaten start leaves both objectives within reach entering the final two fixtures.
