Northamptonshire Crush Lancashire by 316 Runs to Close on Kent
Northamptonshire bowled Lancashire out for 129 to complete a 316-run victory at Old Trafford. The result moved Northants within four points of second-placed Kent in County Championship Division Two.

Northamptonshire completed a 316-run victory over Lancashire at Old Trafford on Sunday, strengthening their pursuit of promotion from County Championship Division Two. The Guardian reported that Lancashire, who began the final day on 24 for four, were dismissed for 129 in their second innings after adding only 105 runs.

Watch the highlights:

The visitors had built the winning position with totals of 284 and 298 for four declared. Lancashire made 137 in their first innings and were set a distant target after Northamptonshire declared their second innings. Their final-day resistance never developed, with no batter reaching 25 as the home side suffered a heavy defeat.

Debutant Ben Walkden made Lancashire's highest individual score in the second innings with 22, while the team's extras total exceeded every batter's contribution. Joe Moores was dismissed obstructing the field after striking the ball into the ground and then catching it as it bounced upward. Mitchell Stanley played on to Calvin Harrison for the final wicket.

The victory was Northamptonshire's first over Lancashire at Old Trafford since 1999, according to The Guardian's live report. Lancashire avoided what would have been their heaviest defeat by runs, but their 316-run loss left them seventh in the eight-team Division Two table with 84 points.

Northamptonshire finished the round third on 135 points, four behind Kent in second. Kent maintained that narrow advantage by beating Middlesex by 46 runs at Merchant Taylors' School. Matt Parkinson took wickets with consecutive deliveries to finish the match after a 74-run ninth-wicket stand between Joe Cracknell and Tom Helm had extended Middlesex's chase.

The promotion race now moves toward a direct meeting between the two challengers. Northamptonshire are scheduled to host Kent at Wantage Road beginning Thursday. Division Two leaders Durham stand on 169 points after their 338-run victory over Derbyshire, leaving the contest behind them focused on the remaining promotion position.
