Northamptonshire beat Worcestershire by six wickets to strengthen promotion push

Northamptonshire strengthened their County Championship promotion challenge with a six-wicket victory over Worcestershire at New Road, completing the result inside three days. The BBC, in a match report supported by the ECB Reporters' Network, reported that Northamptonshire collected 20 points while Worcestershire took three from the Division Two fixture.

The visitors began the day with control of the match after making 289 in response to Worcestershire's first-innings 200. Worcestershire were then dismissed for 182 in their second innings, leaving Northamptonshire a target of 94. The chase ended at 96-4, with George Bartlett unbeaten on 19 as Northamptonshire secured the win.

Worcestershire captain Brett D'Oliveira provided the main resistance with 64. He and Adam Hose brought the home side to within one run of parity during the opening hour, but Luke Procter had Hose caught by Ricardo Vasconcelos at first slip for 18. Ben Sanderson then removed Henry Cullen, before Yuzvendra Chahal trapped Matthew Waite leg before wicket for five.

D'Oliveira reached his half-century from 130 balls and took Worcestershire to lunch on 136-6, a lead of 47. Chahal made the important breakthrough after lunch when substitute wicketkeeper Stuart van der Merwe caught D'Oliveira for 64. Procter dismissed Ben Allison and finished with 2-32, giving him seven wickets in the match.

Chahal also removed Usama Mir and completed the innings by dismissing Adam Finch leg before wicket, ending with 4-46. Those figures gave the India leg-spinner 14 wickets across his past two Championship matches. Worcestershire's total left Northamptonshire with a modest chase, although the home attack did create some late pressure.

Procter made 21 and Vasconcelos 22 before both openers fell after tea. Usama took three wickets for 34 runs, including Saif Zaib and Calvin Harrison, but Bartlett guided Northamptonshire over the line with six wickets remaining. The victory moved Northamptonshire ahead of Kent and kept them firmly in the hunt for promotion to Division One with two rounds left.
