North West 200 moves 2027 dates and restores Tuesday qualifying

The North West 200 will take place a week later in 2027 and return to a Tuesday start for qualifying, BBC Sport reported. The motorcycle road-racing event is changing dates to avoid Northern Ireland's Assembly and local council elections, with polling scheduled for Thursday, May 6.

The organisers' published schedule puts opening qualifying on Tuesday, May 11. A second qualifying session will follow on Thursday, May 13, before three races that evening. Saturday, May 15, is scheduled to feature the remaining six races. Roads are due to close at 9am on each of the three days, setting out the timetable for the revised meeting.

The return to Tuesday reverses the arrangement used from 2024 through 2026, when opening practice was held on Wednesday. According to the BBC, that format had accommodated competitors and teams arriving from the British Superbike meeting at Oulton Park over the traditional May Day weekend.

Event director Mervyn Whyte told BBC Sport NI that teams and competitors consulted at a recent Oulton Park round had supported restoring Tuesday and Thursday sessions. He said the intervening day would help both participants and officials. Whyte also expected the change to extend the race-week festival, with organisers hoping to strengthen the atmosphere around Northern Ireland's north coast.

Alongside the schedule announcement, Coleraine and District Motor Club confirmed that Briggs Equipment will remain title sponsor for another three years. The extension continues a partnership that began in 2024 and keeps the Briggs Equipment North West 200 name in place through the event's centenary in 2029.

In the organisers' announcement, Briggs Equipment divisional director Colin McNeely described the working relationship with the event team as an important factor in renewing the agreement. He said improving the experience for fans remained a priority, while stressing that preparations for the 2027 edition came before the centenary celebrations.

BBC Sport also reported that the sponsorship commitment runs to the same anniversary as the event's recent broadcast partnership with the BBC. The two agreements therefore extend through 2029, while the immediate operational changes centre on the later May dates and the restored gap between qualifying sessions.
