North West 200 moves 2027 race week to avoid elections

The North West 200 will shift its 2027 meeting back by one week to avoid a clash with elections in Northern Ireland, while restoring Tuesday as the opening qualifying day. BBC Sport reports that the international road race will begin qualifying on 11 May, with its main race programme taking place on Saturday, 15 May.

The revised dates keep the meeting clear of polling day for the Northern Ireland Assembly and local council elections, which is scheduled for Thursday, 6 May 2027. Under the new timetable, a second qualifying session and the opening races will take place on Thursday, 13 May. Roads are due to close at 09:00 BST on each of the three days of track activity.

Nine races are scheduled across the meeting, with three on Thursday evening and six on Saturday. The return to Tuesday and Thursday qualifying also ends a three-year period in which opening practice was held on Wednesday. That arrangement was used in 2024, 2025 and 2026 to accommodate riders and teams travelling from the traditional May Day weekend British Superbike meeting at Oulton Park.

Event director Mervyn Whyte told BBC Sport NI's Stephen Watson that organisers had consulted teams and competitors during a recent British Superbike round at Oulton Park. He said everyone they spoke to welcomed the return to the earlier schedule. Whyte pointed to the day between the qualifying sessions as a benefit for both those taking part and the officials responsible for running the event.

Organisers also hope the restored timetable will strengthen the festival atmosphere around the meeting and Northern Ireland's north coast. Whyte said the change would allow for a longer race-week festival. The move therefore combines an election-related adjustment to the dates with a return to the event's previous pattern of practice and racing.

Alongside the scheduling announcement, Briggs Equipment is extending its title sponsorship through the North West 200's centenary in 2029, according to the BBC report. That commitment follows a recently agreed BBC broadcast partnership covering the same anniversary. The sponsorship and broadcast agreements both extend beyond the newly announced 2027 meeting to the event's landmark year.
