Norrie Beats Machac to Advance in Madrid as Boulter Beaten by Pegula
British No. 2 Cameron Norrie secures straight-sets victory over Tomas Machac at the Madrid Open while Katie Boulter suffers a straight-sets defeat to world No. 1 Jessica Pegula.

Cameron Norrie made a impressive start to his Madrid Open campaign with a straight-sets victory over Tomas Machac on Thursday. The British No. 2, currently ranked 42nd in the world, overcame the Czech opponent 6-4, 6-3 in a match that lasted one hour and 27 minutes at the Caja Mágica. Norrie's clinical performance included five aces and converted three of seven break point opportunities to set up a second-round clash with either Alejandro Tabilo or Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The victory marks Norrie's second win over Machac this season, having previously beaten the world No. 40 at the Barcelona Open last month. Norrie's serve was particularly effective throughout the match, winning 78% of first serve points and facing just one break point, which he successfully saved. The 29-year-old's aggressive baseline play forced Machac into 27 unforced errors compared to his own 12.

Meanwhile, Katie Boulter's Madrid Open campaign ended in disappointment as she was comfortably defeated by world No. 1 Jessica Pegula. The American, seeking her third title of the season, cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in just 58 minutes. Boulter struggled to find rhythm against Pegula's relentless baseline pressure, managing only 11 winners while committing 19 unforced errors.

Pegula's performance was near-flawless, losing just four points on her first serve and breaking Boulter five times across the match. The 31-year-old has now won 18 of her last 20 matches this season, establishing herself as the favourite for the title in Madrid. She will face either Bernarda Pera or Emma Navarro in the third round.

The contrasting fortunes for the British contingent highlights the gap between Britain's top players and the elite of women's tennis. Boulter, currently ranked 54th in the world, will need to work on her clay-court game ahead of the French Open, which begins in three weeks. Norrie's victory provides a boost for British tennis ahead of the grass-court season.
