Cameron Norrie Advances in Madrid While Katie Boulter Falls to Jessica Pegula
British tennis had mixed fortunes at the Madrid Open on Friday as Cameron Norrie progressed past Tomas Machac while Katie Boulter was defeated by Jessica Pegula in straight sets.

Cameron Norrie produced a resilient performance to defeat Tomas Machac 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 and advance to the second round of the Madrid Open on Friday. The British No. 2 showed excellent fighting spirit in the deciding set, breaking Machac's serve twice to secure victory after two hours and 18 minutes of play. Norrie, who reached the semi-finals in Madrid two years ago, will face either Alejandro Tabilo or qualifier Borna Coric in the next round.

"It was a tricky match against Tomas. He's a quality player with a big game, and I had to work extremely hard," Norrie said in his on-court interview. "The conditions here are quite different to what we're used to, with the altitude making the ball fly. I'm pleased to get through and build some momentum."

The 29-year-old Londoner was broken twice in the second set as Machac found his rhythm, but Norrie's superior consistency from the baseline proved decisive in the decider. The world No. 44 finished with 32 winners compared to Machac's 28, while committing just 19 unforced errors to his opponent's 24.

Meanwhile, Katie Boulter's campaign came to an end in the women's draw as she was comfortably beaten 6-2, 6-3 by world No. 8 Jessica Pegula. Boulter struggled to handle Pegula's powerful groundstrokes, winning just 43% of points on her second serve. The American, who reached the final in Madrid last year, broke Boulter's serve five times and needed just 58 minutes to complete the rout.

"I felt good out there today. The conditions suited my game, and I was able to dictate points from the baseline," Pegula said. "Katie is a tough competitor, but I was aggressive and moved well. This is one of my favorite tournaments, so I'm looking forward to going deep again."

The result means Boulter will drop out of the world's top 60 when the new rankings are released, while Pegula continues her strong clay-court preparation ahead of the French Open, which begins in less than a month.
