Noah Caluori Reveals He Played Through Detached Wrist Ligament

Saracens wing Noah Caluori has revealed that he played most of his breakthrough season with a detached ligament in his right wrist. BBC Sport reports that the 19-year-old sustained the injury when he landed heavily on his arm while contesting a high ball during Saracens’ defeat by Exeter in December.

Caluori consulted coaches at Saracens and with England before deciding to continue playing and delay surgery until the summer. He said the injury caused pain during several movements, including catching high balls, and forced him to modify his gym programme. Caluori explained that both teams allowed him to make the decision because he remained able to play.

The winger’s choice kept him available during a remarkable first full Premiership campaign. He scored 18 tries in 13 league appearances, finishing as the competition’s joint-leading try scorer. Saracens narrowly missed the play-offs after failing to overhaul Exeter in a final-day contest for a semi-final place.

Caluori also achieved his target of joining England’s summer tour. He scored a try on his international debut against Fiji, then came off the bench in England’s victory over Argentina the following weekend. Those appearances completed a rapid rise from club prospect to senior international while he was still managing the wrist problem.

A social-media image posted in July showed Caluori in a hospital bed with his wrist heavily bandaged after the operation to reconnect the ligament. His recovery means he will miss Saracens’ Premiership opener away to Leicester on Sunday, September 27, according to the BBC report. He could return for the home match against Sale seven days later, although that remains a possibility rather than a confirmed selection.

Caluori said he was satisfied with the decision to keep playing and emphasized that he had accepted the consequences of that choice. He is now focused on avoiding the complacency that can halt the progress of young players. His return timetable will depend on the final stages of rehabilitation, but the Sale fixture offers the first stated opportunity for him to resume a season that follows an exceptional breakthrough year.
