Nine-man Carlisle beat Harrogate 3-0 after two first-half red cards
Carlisle United beat Harrogate Town 3-0 despite losing Miguel Azeez and Harvey Bunker inside 30 minutes. The defeat ended Harrogate's five-match winning run in the National League.

Carlisle United overcame two first-half dismissals to beat Harrogate Town 3-0 at Brunton Park, ending the visitors' five-game winning run in the National League. BBC Sport reported that Rob Elliot's team played around an hour with nine men but still scored twice after being reduced to that number, turning an early advantage into a decisive victory.

Watch the highlights:

Harrogate had entered the match second in the table, 10 places and 11 points above Carlisle. The hosts took the lead before midfielder Miguel Azeez, formerly of Arsenal, was sent off in the 14th minute. Fellow midfielder Harvey Bunker then received a straight red card after 30 minutes, leaving Carlisle to protect their advantage with two fewer players for the remaining hour.

Rather than surrender their lead, Carlisle extended it immediately after the interval and went on to finish with three goals without reply. Harrogate could not turn their numerical superiority into a comeback. The result left the visitors 10 points behind National League leaders Boreham Wood, with their recent sequence of victories brought to an abrupt end.

Harrogate manager and co-owner Simon Weaver told BBC Radio York he was embarrassed by the performance. He suggested his players had allowed their recent success to affect their approach and said they had failed to show the quality in possession demonstrated earlier in the season. Weaver acknowledged that Carlisle deserved the win, while stressing that his own team had fallen below its established standards and had not handled the situation properly.

Elliot offered a contrasting assessment to BBC Radio Cumbria, describing the match as the most extraordinary of his playing and managerial career. The former Newcastle goalkeeper credited the performance rather than luck and expressed pride in the effort shown by his players. He hoped the result would help bring the club together and provide momentum, saying the display reflected the commitment he wanted from both players and staff.

Carlisle's players were to receive an unscheduled day off on Thursday before Saturday's trip to Altrincham, according to the BBC report. Harrogate's next match is away to Forest Green on Saturday, giving Weaver's side its next opportunity to respond after a defeat in which two early dismissals failed to produce the advantage the visitors needed.
