Nine-man Carlisle beat Harrogate 3-0 after two first-half red cards
Carlisle United overcame two first-half dismissals to beat Harrogate Town 3-0 at Brunton Park. The result ended the visitors' five-game winning run and drew sharply contrasting reactions from the managers.

Carlisle United beat Harrogate Town 3-0 at Brunton Park despite playing with nine men for the final hour, ending the visitors' five-match winning run. According to BBC Sport's report, Rob Elliot's side protected an early advantage after two first-half dismissals and then extended their lead, leaving Harrogate manager Simon Weaver questioning his team's response to an unusually favourable situation.

Watch the highlights:

The visitors had arrived second in the National League, 10 places and 11 points ahead of Carlisle. Those standings, together with Harrogate's recent results, made the home side's task challenging even before the red cards. Carlisle nevertheless struck first, establishing a lead that they retained as the balance of numbers changed dramatically during the opening half.

Former Arsenal player Miguel Azeez was sent off after 14 minutes, and fellow midfielder Harvey Bunker received a straight red card after 30 minutes. With two players missing and an hour still to negotiate, Carlisle faced a prolonged test against one of the division's leading teams. Instead of conceding their advantage, they added to it immediately after half-time and went on to complete the three-goal victory.

Weaver told BBC Radio York that he was embarrassed by Harrogate's performance and felt the team had become carried away with the praise surrounding their winning sequence. He said the dismissals placed the responsibility on his players to demonstrate the quality in possession they had shown earlier in the season. In his assessment, they failed to manage the situation and performed below their established standards, while Carlisle deserved the result.

Elliot offered a very different reaction in his interview with BBC Radio Cumbria. The Carlisle manager credited his players' performances rather than fortune and expressed pride in their commitment. He described the match as the most extraordinary of his playing or managerial career and said he hoped the result would help bring the club together and generate momentum.

The former Newcastle goalkeeper also said his players would receive an unscheduled day off on Thursday before Saturday's trip to Altrincham. Harrogate are due to visit Forest Green on Saturday and, following the defeat, sit 10 points behind National League leaders Boreham Wood. Their immediate task is to respond to a loss that ended a strong run despite a two-player advantage.
