Nick Kyrgios Accepts One-Month Ban After Positive Cocaine Test
Nick Kyrgios is eligible to return to tennis after accepting a one-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine. Australian Associated Press, reporting through The Guardian, said the International Tennis Integrity Agency reduced the Australian player’s sanction after accepting that his cocaine use occurred outside competition and after he committed to an approved treatment program.
Watch the highlights:
The case arose from a sample Kyrgios provided on June 22 at an ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain. The ITIA said the sample contained benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, and that a World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratory confirmed the positive finding on July 17. Kyrgios had been provisionally suspended since August 4.
According to the report, Kyrgios told ITIA investigators that he had used cocaine socially during a night out several days before he was due to compete in Mallorca. The agency consulted an independent scientific expert at a WADA-accredited laboratory, who found that his explanation was consistent with the amount detected in the sample. On that basis, the ITIA classified the use as outside competition.
WADA rules provide a default three-month suspension for this type of violation, with the possibility of reducing it to one month when the athlete commits to a treatment program approved by the relevant integrity body. The ITIA said Kyrgios could have appealed his provisional suspension, but he chose not to do so. He is permitted to compete again from Friday after entering the program.
Kyrgios must also forfeit the 6,570 euros in prize money he earned at the Mallorca event, where he lost in the first round to fellow Australian Adam Walton. During the suspension, he was barred from playing, coaching or attending events sanctioned by the men’s and women’s professional tours, as well as national-level tournaments in Australia.
The 31-year-old reached the Wimbledon singles final in 2022 and has been ranked as high as No. 13 in the world. He played four official ATP Tour singles matches in 2026 amid the effects of knee and wrist injuries. His most recent match was in the Wimbledon men’s doubles on July 2, when he and Alexander Bublik were beaten in the opening round.
