NFL ties record with 12 one-score games on Sunday

The NFL matched its record for the most one-score games in a single day on Sunday, with 12 of the 14 contests decided by eight points or fewer, according to BBC Sport. The third week of the season brought late changes of lead in Denver, a defeat for defending champions Seattle and a last-second finish in the league's first game in Rio de Janeiro.

Denver overturned a 16-0 half-time deficit to beat the Los Angeles Rams 30-26. After drawing level in the third quarter, the Broncos moved ahead during a closing sequence that produced three lead changes in the final five minutes. Safety Talanoa Hufanga returned an interception 66 yards for a touchdown before Matt Stafford answered with a 48-yard scoring pass to Konata Mumpfield.

Bo Nix then reached the end zone to put Denver back in front, leaving Stafford 47 seconds to respond. The Rams advanced far enough to attempt a pass into the end zone from 19 yards with two seconds remaining, but Hufanga intercepted again to secure the Broncos' victory.

Washington ended Seattle's 12-game winning streak with a 33-31 victory. Marcus Mariota's third touchdown pass helped the Commanders establish a 24-10 lead before the Seahawks recovered to level in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Kain Medrano then returned Sam Darnold's second interception 50 yards for the touchdown that proved decisive.

In Rio, Baltimore beat Dallas 34-31 at the Maracana. A Cowboys field goal tied the game with seven seconds left, only for Lamar Jackson to complete a 27-yard pass that set up Tyler Loop's winning 56-yard kick as time expired. The fixture was the second of nine international games scheduled for this season.

Two more close results left every AFC North team at 2-1. Cleveland defeated Carolina 21-18 after Deshaun Watson found Harold Fannin Jr for a 14-yard touchdown, while Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati 30-27. Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes before Derrick Harmon forced a Joe Burrow fumble on a sack to seal the Steelers' win.

Buffalo, Kansas City, San Francisco, Minnesota and Las Vegas all remained unbeaten. Philadelphia could join them at 3-0 when it visits Chicago on Monday to complete the week's schedule.
