Newport Flanker Kyle Tayler-Woolston Shares Supportive Coming-Out Story

Newport flanker Kyle Tayler-Woolston will begin the 2026-27 Super Rygbi Cymru season with a new surname following his summer wedding to husband George. BBC Sport reported that Newport publicly marked the occasion, which included the first same-sex blessing held at St Basil's Church in Bassaleg. Tayler-Woolston has been open with his teammates about his sexuality since 2018.

The open-side flanker grew up watching Newport and first represented the club on permit against Cardiff in October 2015 before completing a permanent move. Earlier in his career he captained Cardiff Met and Wales Students and also played for Newbridge. He has since become one of Newport's most established players, making 176 appearances for the Black and Ambers.

Tayler-Woolston told the BBC that he came out to his family in his late teens but initially kept his sexuality private in rugby environments. He feared that coaches and teammates might judge him on that basis rather than on his performances. Keeping parts of his life separate became mentally draining, and he gradually began telling a small number of people at Newport.

He later spoke directly with head coach Ty Morris, who had signed him. According to Tayler-Woolston, Morris and others at the club responded with support, allowing rugby selection to remain based on performance. The news then spread naturally through the squad and management without the rejection he had feared.

During the 2018-19 season, his first full campaign openly discussing his sexuality and with George attending matches, Tayler-Woolston won Newport's player-of-the-season awards from teammates, coaches and supporters. He later started Newport's 2025 Super Rygbi Cymru grand final victory at Ebbw Vale and featured in last season's SRC Cup final win over Llandovery.

Tayler-Woolston said his next playing ambition is to reach 200 Newport appearances if his body allows. He hopes his story can give younger players confidence and provide the kind of visible example he lacked. He also stressed that other people have faced very different experiences and that the decision to come out remains personal.
