Newcastle delay Fineanganofo arrival to preserve All Blacks World Cup bid

Newcastle Red Bulls have agreed to postpone Fehi Fineanganofo's arrival by a season, allowing the New Zealand wing to pursue selection for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. BBC Sport reported that the revised arrangement keeps his two-season commitment to the English club intact, with the contract now covering 2027-28 and 2028-29.

The 24-year-old's original agreement was announced in January and was due to begin this season. His circumstances changed after a standout campaign with the Wellington-based Hurricanes, during which he set a record for tries scored in a single Super Rugby season. Fineanganofo subsequently made his New Zealand Test debut against France in July.

New Zealand's selection rules made the timing of his move significant. Joining Newcastle overseas this year would have taken him out of contention for the World Cup, which starts in October 2027. He will instead remain with the Hurricanes for another season, retaining the opportunity to compete for a place without abandoning his Newcastle agreement.

Fineanganofo thanked Newcastle for accommodating his international ambitions and said he remained committed to joining after the tournament. The arrangement gives him a chance to seek World Cup selection, rather than guaranteeing a place. Newcastle sporting general manager Neil McIlroy backed that ambition and said further international experience would enhance the qualities the winger brings to the club.

The revised schedule follows months of uncertainty about when Fineanganofo would arrive. In June, New Zealand Rugby denied trying to arrange his release from the Newcastle contract. More recently, head coach Dan McFarland had said he expected the winger to join in November and play this season, according to BBC Sport's report.

Newcastle began their league campaign with Werner Kok and Christian Wade as their first-choice wings. Kok, formerly of Ulster, was signed in June as uncertainty over Fineanganofo's move grew. McIlroy expressed confidence in the existing squad's quality and depth, but left open the possibility of recruiting another outside back if a suitable player becomes available. The club opened its league season with a 59-26 defeat away to defending champions Northampton on Friday.
