Newcastle Add Fernandez-Pardo as Woltemade Leaves for Juventus

Newcastle United completed the signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille on the same deadline-day afternoon that Nick Woltemade joined Juventus on loan. BBC Sport reported that Fernandez-Pardo had been Newcastle's leading target before the transfer window opened, although the 21-year-old's arrival required complex negotiations that were only concluded late in the summer.

The two forward moves completed a major overhaul at St James' Park. Woltemade, Newcastle's club-record signing, left only a year after joining the club. Fernandez-Pardo became the eighth new arrival of a window in which Newcastle set new club records for both spending and sales, according to the BBC's Newcastle United reporter Ciaran Kelly.

Change extended beyond the playing squad. Eddie Howe stepped down as head coach in July, and Matthias Jaissle replaced him only a few weeks before the new season began. Captain Bruno Guimaraes was one of several important departures, moving to Arsenal for £75 million after Newcastle had finished 12th in the Premier League and missed out on European revenue.

Other established players also left Tyneside. Kieran Trippier departed at the end of his contract and subsequently joined Wolves, while Anthony Gordon moved to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali signed for Tottenham. BBC Sport reported that the Gordon and Tonali sales allowed Newcastle to comply with financial rules and reinvest in the squad.

Newcastle's recruitment gathered pace in the final two weeks of the window. Defender Amar Dedic and midfielder Nico Gonzalez arrived before Fernandez-Pardo completed the incoming group. The club had earlier missed out on Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi, who chose Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively, but continued with alternative targets.

Fernandez-Pardo brings the pace Jaissle has highlighted as a defining quality. His arrival follows encouraging early results for the reshaped squad: a 2-2 draw with Liverpool and a 2-0 victory at Tottenham. The Belgian forward must now adapt to the Premier League, while Woltemade begins the next stage of his career in Turin after a single season with Newcastle.
