Newcastle Beat Tottenham 2-0 for Matthias Jaissle's First Premier League Win

Newcastle United earned Matthias Jaissle's first Premier League win as head coach with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening. Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored after halftime at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while the visitors kept their first clean sheet in any competition since March.

Tottenham created the clearer openings before the break, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made three important saves. BBC Sport reported that Hornicek produced a strong stop from Jan Paul van Hecke's header, while defender Lewis Hall blocked Pedro Porro's goalbound effort. The teams reached halftime without a goal.

Newcastle increased their aggression after the interval and scored with their only two shots on target. Nico Gonzalez began the first move with a cross-field pass over Tottenham left-back Andy Robertson. Amar Dedic flicked the ball on to Elanga, who turned former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali inside the penalty area and finished off the post.

Wissa doubled the lead from a set piece. Sean Steur delivered a corner, substitute Nick Woltemade headed it down and Wissa improvised with an overhead kick. The goals continued positive starts under Jaissle for Elanga and Wissa, who both joined Newcastle last summer.

The defensive result also represented an improvement on Newcastle's away record from last season, when they won four of 19 Premier League matches on the road. Jaissle said his side had not played well in the first half but praised the commitment shown in defending every ball and cross. He also cautioned that Newcastle still face a long journey and further challenges.

Several recent signings contributed to the victory. Gonzalez supplied the pass that opened Tottenham's defense, Dedic created Elanga's goal and Hornicek protected the clean sheet. BBC Sport reported that Newcastle signed the three players this summer as part of the club's rebuilding after Tonali's move to Tottenham. The defeat left Tonali on the losing side in his first match against his former club.
