Newcastle Beat Tottenham 2-0 as Elanga and Wissa Strike

Newcastle United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in north London on Saturday, giving head coach Matthias Jaissle his first Premier League victory. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring after halftime before Yoane Wissa added a second with an overhead kick, according to BBC Sport’s report from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham created the stronger opportunities during a goalless first half, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made three important saves. The summer signing from Braga denied Jan Paul van Hecke with a firm stop, while Lewis Hall also blocked a goalbound Pedro Porro effort as the visitors protected their clean sheet.

Newcastle became more aggressive after the interval and scored with their only two shots on target. Nico Gonzalez began the opening move with a cross-field pass over Tottenham left-back Andy Robertson. Amar Dedic reached the ball and redirected it to Elanga, who moved past former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali inside the penalty area and finished off the post.

Wissa doubled the lead following a corner delivered by substitute Sean Steur. Nick Woltemade, another player introduced from the bench, headed the ball down before Wissa improvised an overhead finish. Elanga and Wissa had both joined Newcastle for reported £55 million fees from Nottingham Forest and Brentford respectively in the previous summer.

The result marked an immediate away improvement for a Newcastle side that won only four of its 19 Premier League road matches last season. It also delivered the club’s first clean sheet in any venue since March. Jaissle credited his players’ commitment during a difficult first half while stressing after the match that the season still presented a long journey.

The victory followed a period of major change on Tyneside. Eddie Howe stepped down after Newcastle’s preseason defeat by Bristol City, while Tonali moved to Tottenham in a deal worth up to £100 million. Newcastle subsequently invested in younger additions including Gonzalez, Dedic and Hornicek. At Tottenham, Tonali’s first match against his former club ended in defeat, while Newcastle’s new and returning players combined to secure all three points.
