New Zealand beat Scotland 43-21 after second-half shutout at Murrayfield
New Zealand defeated Scotland 43-21 at Murrayfield in the Nations Championship, scoring seven tries and keeping the hosts scoreless throughout the second half. According to BBC Sport's match report, Scotland trailed by just three points at the interval after hooker Ewan Ashman scored all three of their tries, but could not sustain that challenge after the restart.
Watch the highlights:
The result extended New Zealand's unbeaten record against Scotland to 34 Tests, comprising 32 victories and two draws. Scotland's search for a first win in the fixture continued despite a first half in which their line-out attack repeatedly produced points and punished disciplinary lapses by the visitors. Finn Russell converted each of Ashman's three scores.
Wallace Sititi opened the scoring for New Zealand after a close-range line-out. Scotland replied through Ashman following a 50-22 kick from Kyle Rowe that created an attacking platform. Russell's conversion briefly put the hosts ahead, before tries from Ethan de Groot and Codie Taylor helped New Zealand establish a 17-7 advantage during the opening quarter.
Yellow cards then disrupted the All Blacks. Peter Lakai was sent to the sin-bin for repeated offside infringements, and Ashman scored his second try while he was absent. Beauden Barrett answered for New Zealand, but Sititi subsequently received a yellow card for going off his feet. Ashman completed his hat-trick from another driving line-out, leaving the visitors 24-21 ahead at half-time.
New Zealand took control after the break. Josh Moorby finished in space following a scrum move and a pass from Jordie Barrett. Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu was then yellow-carded as pressure on the home defence continued. With Tuipulotu off the field, Beauden Barrett scored his second try after the ball moved through Quinn Tupaea and Damian McKenzie.
Asafo Aumua added New Zealand's seventh try to complete a second-half scoring return of 19 points without reply. McKenzie finished with four conversions. Scotland's three first-half tries had kept the contest close, but the visitors' three further tries after the interval turned a narrow lead into a 22-point winning margin, with no second-half score to lift the home side.
