New Zealand beat Scotland 43-21 as Beauden Barrett reaches 50 Test tries
New Zealand defeated Scotland 43-21 at Murrayfield in the Nations Championship on Saturday, scoring seven tries and shutting out the hosts after half-time. BBC Sport reported that Scotland trailed only 24-21 at the interval, with hooker Ewan Ashman supplying all three of their tries before the visitors pulled away.
Watch the highlights:
Wallace Sititi opened the scoring for New Zealand, but Ashman's first try and Finn Russell's conversion briefly put Scotland ahead. Ethan de Groot and Codie Taylor then crossed for the visitors, who established a 17-7 advantage during an opening quarter featuring four tries.
Scotland capitalised on yellow cards for Peter Lakai and Sititi. Ashman scored twice more, completing his hat-trick, while Beauden Barrett also touched down for New Zealand before the break. Russell converted each of Scotland's tries, keeping the home side within three points despite conceding four first-half touchdowns.
The second half brought tries for Josh Moorby, Barrett and replacement hooker Asafo Aumua. Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu was yellow-carded during the visitors' sustained pressure. Damian McKenzie finished with four conversions, and New Zealand won the half 19-0 to turn a close contest into a 22-point victory.
Barrett's double also brought an individual milestone. In separate post-match coverage, BBC Scotland chief sports writer Tom English reported that the 35-year-old had reached 50 Test tries across 148 appearances. His second score came in the 51st minute, extending New Zealand's advantage well before the closing stages.
The defeat prolonged Scotland's wait for a first victory in this fixture, stretching back 121 years. English reported that Gregor Townsend and his players identified missed first-half opportunities, discipline, breakdown difficulties and ball retention among the problems afterwards. New Zealand had reached their final total with 12 minutes still to play.
Scotland's next opponents are Australia on Sunday of the following week. According to English's report, Townsend's side have won four of their past five meetings with the Wallabies. That recent record provides the backdrop to their next match after a Murrayfield performance in which a productive opening half was followed by no further Scottish points.
