Season-Opening Walk-Off: Secor Lifts Lancers in Extras; Hill Strikes Out 16 as Kings Roll in New Hampshire Baseball Opener
The two-time defending Division I champions opened their season in dramatic fashion. Paige Secors bases-loaded triple deep into the outfield in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Mady Normand from third and gave Londonderry High School a 5-4 win over Salem on Monday, spoiling Salems strong opening effort in a game that went to international tiebreaker rules.
Secors clutch hit erased what had looked like a certain defeat. Salem had built their lead early, but the Lancers mounted their comeback in the fifth inning, plating four runs to take control. From there, Londonderry ace Elisabeth Kearney settled in, allowing just two earned runs across the full game while striking out 13 batters and surrendering five hits and one walk.
At the plate, Kearney and Shannon Crowley each drove in two runs for the Lancers. The win was a statement that even without several key contributors from last years title team, Londonderry remains the team to beat in Division I.
Over at Padden Field, the Manchester Memorial and Central Kings联合 team made their Division I debut with an impressive offensive explosion, beating Nashua North 11-6. Pitcher Elin Hill was dominant on the mound, striking out 16 batters in 6 and two-thirds innings while allowing just one earned run and four hits. She was backed by a balanced offensive attack that saw five different players collect at least two hits.
Kianaly Gallego led the way with a 2-for-4 night including two doubles and four RBIs. Cailin Maguire went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Avery Menswar, Madyson Butt, and Lindsay Wilson each added two hits. The defensive play of the game came from Harper Lafond, who tracked down a short fly ball in center field and doubled off the runner at first base to end the game.
In other action from around New Hampshire high school sports, Pinkerton opened its baseball season with an 8-1 win over Nashua South behind a dominant pitching performance from Julia Caruso, who allowed just one earned run with 17 strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Mollie Wheale contributed a home run and a double with two RBIs.
In boys lacrosse, Trinity edged Pelham 14-13 in a tight opener, while Exeter rolled past Windham 18-4. Derryfield opened its girls lacrosse season with an 18-1 victory over Belmont, with Maddy Paolino accounting for eight goals and three assists.
The Londonderry boys volleyball team made a statement in its season opener, sweeping Pinkerton 3-0 in dominant fashion with set scores of 25-18, 25-13, and 25-11.
With the season now underway across all divisions, coaches and players across New Hampshire will be looking to build on opening-night performances as the race toward championship tournaments begins in earnest.
