Neto double earns Chelsea 2-0 win at Everton as Martínez goes off injured
Pedro Neto scored both goals as Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, October 17. TNT Sports recorded his strikes in the 46th and 90th minutes, with the visitors taking all three points in the Premier League fixture. The result left Everton with their first league defeat of the season.
Watch the highlights:
Chelsea broke the deadlock almost immediately after the interval. According to BBC Sport, Morgan Rogers contributed a backheel during the build-up and Jorrel Hato supplied the assist for Neto. The winger had already tested Jordan Pickford from distance before half-time, then found the net early in the second period to put Chelsea ahead.
Both sides had opportunities before that breakthrough. BBC Sport reported that Jack Grealish created a headed chance for Thierno Barry, who failed to beat Emiliano Martínez. Chelsea also came close through Moisés Caicedo, whose volley hit the crossbar. Cole Palmer tested Pickford, while Jordan Henderson had an effort blocked during the opening exchanges.
The match was interrupted by an injury to Martínez after a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. BBC Sport reported that Chelsea's goalkeeper was taken off on a stretcher, with Mike Penders coming on for his Premier League debut. Penders subsequently dealt with a cross and made a save as Chelsea protected their advantage.
Neto added the second after a blocked free-kick dropped to him inside the penalty area. AS reported that João Pedro had earlier been denied by Pickford and that the victory was Chelsea's fourth league win of the campaign, and their second in succession. It was also their first league clean sheet this season, according to AS.
TNT Sports' match statistics showed Chelsea with 53% possession and seven corners, compared with Everton's five. Its table after the final whistle placed Chelsea fourth on 13 points from seven matches, with four wins, one draw and two defeats. Everton stood sixth on 10 points after two wins, four draws and this loss, with other weekend fixtures still to be completed.
