Naderi and Neil score as Rangers beat St Mirren 2-0
Rangers won 2-0 at St Mirren on Saturday, with Ryan Naderi and Dan Neil scoring at the Marbill Coaches Stadium. Naderi converted an 18th-minute penalty before Neil added the second in the 61st minute, as recorded by FotMob's match data.
Watch the highlights:
The opening goal followed a disputed decision involving James Penrice. Sky Sports reported that its pundits questioned whether the contact justified a penalty. Penrice said afterwards that he had felt contact but had not watched the incident back. Neil's second-half effort took a deflection before finding the net.
St Mirren had made five changes to the team that faced Motherwell in their previous league match. The club confirmed starts for Declan John, Louis Jackson, Samuel Ramos, Ismeal Kabia and Jake Young. Ryan Carr was suspended, while Paul Nsio was ineligible to face his parent club.
The hosts finished with more possession but fewer attempts. FotMob recorded St Mirren with 55 percent of the ball and 11 shots, compared with Rangers' 45 percent and 17 shots. Rangers also registered 34 touches inside the opposition penalty area, against 15 for the home side.
St Mirren made three substitutions in the 64th minute, introducing Luke Thomas, Liam Donnelly and Eseosa Sule for Ramos, Fraser Taylor and Young. Rangers later brought on Djeidi Gassama, Tochi Chukwuani and Findlay Curtis in a triple change of their own. Tuur Rommens then replaced Penrice, according to FotMob's event log.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Rangers manager Derek McInnes said his side deserved the victory and had controlled the game. He considered the second goal important in securing the result, although he also felt Rangers could have finished more clinically and increased their winning margin.
Sky Sports reported that the victory extended Rangers' unbeaten sequence across all competitions to 12 matches, following draws on their previous two league trips to Dundee and Hearts. Rangers moved one point behind Celtic, who could restore a four-point advantage by beating Kilmarnock at home on Sunday.
