Musetti advances as Fery falls on New York debut

Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the second round of the US Open with a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Arthur Fery on Tuesday. The Italian 13th seed completed the straight-sets win on Grandstand in New York, ending Fery's first appearance in the main draw at Flushing Meadows.

The official ATP Tour results recorded Musetti's win in the round of 128, with the first two sets following the same pattern before the third became tighter. Musetti took each of the opening sets 6-3, then secured the decisive break he needed to close the final set 7-5.

BBC Sport reported that Fery was unable to reproduce the run that had made him one of the notable British stories of the summer. He arrived in New York after reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, but Musetti prevented another extended Grand Slam campaign by completing the match in three sets.

Fery's Wimbledon performance had carried him from world number 114 to a career-high number 36, according to the US Open's official website. The French-born Briton reached that semifinal as a wild card and became only the second men's wild card in the Open era to reach the last four at Wimbledon. He also came into the US Open immediately after reaching the Winston-Salem final.

The draw nevertheless gave Fery a demanding opening assignment. Musetti has reached the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments since 2024, the US Open reported before the match. His major record in that period includes a Wimbledon semifinal in 2024 and a Roland Garros semifinal in 2025, providing a clear contrast in experience on the New York stage.

For Musetti, the result delivers a place in the second round without the physical cost of a fourth or fifth set. For Fery, the defeat closes his US Open debut at the opening hurdle despite the momentum he carried from Wimbledon and Winston-Salem. The confirmed score showed that his strongest resistance came in the final set, but it was not enough to extend the contest.
