Murrell double sends Hibs bottom as Falkirk win at Easter Road
Jacob Murrell scored twice as Falkirk beat Hibernian 2-1 at Easter Road on Saturday, sending the hosts to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership. BBC Sport Scotland reported that the visitors climbed to ninth after spoiling Marink Reedijk's first home match in charge.
Watch the highlights:
Both Falkirk goals came before half-time. Ryan Strain supplied Murrell for a strike from outside the penalty area, before Ethan Ross set up his second after intercepting Thibault Klidje's back-heel. Owen Elding then reduced the deficit from Felix Passlack's delivery, with a VAR handball review leaving the goal intact.
Hibs also had a penalty award revised to a free-kick outside the box following a VAR review. Martin Boyle missed from the resulting set-piece, while Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain later kept out substitute Jamie McGrath. The visitors held on for their first top-flight victory at Easter Road in more than 20 years.
BBC's separate assessment of Hibs' form underlined the gap between their possession and their finishing. The home side had 70% of the ball and attempted 17 shots to Falkirk's 10, but managed only three efforts on target. Falkirk put five on target despite having fewer attempts overall, a contrast that accompanied the narrow scoreline.
The defeat left Hibs with one point from their past six league matches. Their home record now stands at six defeats in seven Premiership fixtures, although Reedijk has only recently arrived. He has lost both of his opening games, having also been beaten at Dundee United the previous Saturday.
Reedijk nevertheless maintained that he had seen improvement from that first outing, according to BBC's reporting. He pointed to positive signs despite another defeat. The immediate task is to turn those signs into results, with two losses leaving his tenure without a point so far.
The difficult start follows back-to-back top-six finishes under predecessor David Gray. Hibs also came close to reaching the group stage in Europe before a late home collapse against Gent. Reedijk now faces Celtic and a League Cup semi-final against Hearts among his next three games.
