Muriqi winner sinks Liverpool as Fenerbahce fight back twice in Istanbul
Fenerbahce overturned two Liverpool leads to win 3-2 in the Champions League. Vedat Muriqi scored the decisive header as Dirk Kuyt celebrated victory over his former club.

Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2 in Istanbul on Wednesday, November 4, ending the visitors' winning start to the Champions League league phase. According to Sky Sports' match report, Vedat Muriqi scored the winner in the 79th minute after Liverpool had twice taken the lead, giving Fenerbahce their first victory of this European campaign.

Watch the highlights:

Trey Nyoni opened the scoring after 25 minutes with his first professional goal. The 19-year-old's volley took a deflection that left Ederson unable to stop it. Liverpool's advantage lasted only four minutes: Mason Greenwood's free-kick struck Jeremy Jacquet and went past Alisson to bring the home side level before the interval.

Liverpool restored their lead through Alexander Isak in the 69th minute. Sky Sports reported that Isak, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo had been introduced as substitutes, with Gakpo supplying the cross for Isak to head in with his first touch. Archie Brown equalised in the 73rd minute, before Muriqi's header completed the turnaround six minutes later.

BBC Sport reported that all three Fenerbahce goals originated from set-pieces. For the second equaliser, Gakpo's header diverted the ball beyond Alisson and left Brown with a close-range finish. Brown then supplied the high ball that Muriqi headed home, beating three Liverpool players to it. Brown finished the night with both a goal and an assist.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola criticised the defending afterwards, telling the BBC that his side should have handled those situations better. He also pointed to the noise inside the stadium, saying it made communication difficult both for his players and for him when trying to give instructions. The defeat followed Sunday's loss to Arsenal, leaving Liverpool with successive setbacks after five consecutive wins.

For Fenerbahce interim coach Dirk Kuyt, victory came against a club where he spent six years as a player. The BBC reported that he had urged his squad to stay united and draw inspiration from Liverpool's European comebacks. Kuyt is due to step aside, with Emre Belozoglu officially taking charge on Thursday, leaving the incoming coach a team that has just secured a notable European win.
