Muriqi completes Fenerbahce comeback as Liverpool lose 3-2 in Istanbul
Fenerbahce overturned two Liverpool leads to win 3-2 in the Champions League in Istanbul, with Vedat Muriqi heading the decisive goal. BBC Sport reported that Alexander Isak had put the visitors ahead in the 69th minute, only for Archie Brown and Muriqi to turn the match around before the 80th. The result ended Liverpool's winning start to the competition after three victories.
Watch the highlights:
Liverpool's opening goal was a personal milestone for Trey Nyoni. According to the Guardian's match report, Rio Ngumoha's blocked shot led to a Dominik Szoboszlai cross, which Brown headed away. Nyoni met the clearance with a low volley that took a deflection off Kojo Peprah Oppong before beating Ederson, giving the midfielder his first senior goal.
Fenerbahce soon answered through Mason Greenwood. The Guardian reported that Szoboszlai conceded a free-kick with a foul on N'Golo Kanté, and Greenwood's effort struck Jérémy Jacquet before passing the wrongfooted Alisson. Liverpool subsequently regained the lead through two substitutes: Cody Gakpo supplied a cross from the left and Isak headed it in. Both had been on the pitch for only three minutes.
The visitors again failed to protect their advantage. The Guardian described how Kanté delivered the ball following a corner and Gakpo's attempted defensive header diverted it away from Alisson, leaving Brown to finish at the far post. Brown then sent a high ball into the penalty area, where Muriqi held off Liverpool defenders to head home the winner.
BBC Sport reported that all three Fenerbahce goals originated from set-pieces. Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola criticised the manner of the concessions and said the stadium noise had made communication difficult. The defeat followed Sunday's loss to Arsenal, leaving Liverpool with two losses in four days after a run of five consecutive victories.
For interim Fenerbahce coach Dirk Kuyt, the result provided a winning conclusion before Emre Belozoglu was due to take over officially on Thursday, according to BBC Sport. Kuyt, who spent six years playing for Liverpool, praised his players' unity. Fenerbahce had entered the match after losing four of their first 10 league games and suffering a 6-0 European defeat at Aston Villa.
