Munster mark Anthony Foley anniversary with tributes to former captain and coach
Munster are marking 10 years since Anthony Foley's death with commemorative jackets, an eighth-minute applause and tributes from former team-mates. The programme honours his influence as both captain and head coach.

Munster are marking the tenth anniversary of Anthony Foley's death with a programme of tributes honouring their former captain and head coach. BBC Sport reports that the commemorations include special player jackets, a photographic display and applause during the eighth minute of Saturday's Champions Cup match against Racing at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork.

Watch the highlights:

Friday marks a decade since Foley died in his sleep in Paris, where Munster were preparing to play Racing 92. He was 42. The commemorative presentation jackets will carry the club crest and the number eight, his playing position. The programme also includes a performance of There Is An Isle, the anthem of his club Shannon RFC, with photographs displayed in Marina Park outside the stadium.

Foley captained Munster to their 2006 Heineken Cup triumph and earned 62 caps for Ireland. Born in Limerick, he made his Munster debut in 1994 and played 201 times for the province, including 86 European Cup appearances. He also helped Ireland secure the Triple Crown in 2004 and won five All-Ireland League titles with Shannon, before retiring as a player in 2008.

His coaching career began with a technical advisory role at Munster. He became forwards coach in 2011 and succeeded Rob Penney as head coach in 2014. Defence coach Denis Leamy, a former team-mate, described Foley's influence on his development and the belief he instilled in others. In comments reported by the BBC, Leamy recalled a leader whose conviction in the Munster jersey shaped both individual players and the wider squad.

Current captain Tadhg Beirne, who joined Munster in 2018, said Foley's words and actions remain part of discussions around the club. Peter O'Mahony, captain at the time of Foley's death, also reflected on the loss in an interview with Rugby Union Weekly. He said the experience changed his perspective on his life and career and remains difficult to discuss.

After Foley's death, the Racing fixture was postponed. Munster returned to European action at Thomond Park the following week, beating Glasgow 38-17. The anniversary commemorations bring together that period of mourning with recognition of Foley's achievements as a player and his lasting influence on colleagues who worked alongside him.
