Muñoz and Isak lift Liverpool past nine-man Brentford
Liverpool recovered from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, ending the hosts' unbeaten start to the Premier League season. Victor Muñoz equalised before Alexander Isak scored the winner, while Brentford finished with nine players after two dismissals, according to Mundo Deportivo's match report.
Watch the highlights:
The first half included a reversed penalty decision before Brentford took the lead. Nathan Ridley's report for the Mirror, carried by AOL, said referee John Brooks initially penalised Dango Ouattara for a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. Video review showed Ouattara had played the ball, and Brooks withdrew the award. Keane Lewis-Potter subsequently headed Brentford in front before the interval.
Liverpool's route back into the match opened when Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time. The Mirror reported that the midfielder headbutted Jérémy Jacquet during an incident before a corner. The dismissal left Keith Andrews' side defending their advantage with 10 players throughout the second half, before a further red card reduced their numbers again late on.
Andoni Iraola also had to reorganise because of injuries. Dominik Szoboszlai went off in the opening half, and substitute Jeremie Frimpong lasted only seven minutes after coming on at the break, the Mirror reported. Iraola introduced Rio Ngumoha in response, with Muñoz moving to right-back. Despite that positional change, the Spaniard continued to contribute in attack and scored Liverpool's equaliser.
Mundo Deportivo described Muñoz's goal as the product of a forward run and a change of direction before his finish. Isak then put Liverpool ahead in the 70th minute, meeting a headed pass from Bradley Barcola. Brentford continued to compete despite their numerical disadvantage, and Liverpool did not add a third goal to settle the contest before the final whistle.
Vitaly Janelt's late dismissal left Brentford with nine as Liverpool secured the three points. The result moved Iraola's team provisionally into fifth place, Mundo Deportivo reported, three points behind second-placed Arsenal ahead of their Sunday visit to Nottingham Forest. Brentford were sixth, two points below Liverpool, after their first league defeat of the campaign.
