Morton sack Ian Murray after one point from eight league games
Greenock Morton have dismissed manager Ian Murray with immediate effect after a start to the Scottish Championship season that has left them bottom of the table. The club confirmed on Thursday that first-team coach Bill Orr has also been removed from his role.
Watch the highlights:
Michael O'Halloran and Gary Miller will oversee the first team until further notice. Morton's statement did not name a permanent successor or set a timetable for an appointment. The interim pair take charge before Saturday's home match against Raith Rovers at Cappielow, with the club asking supporters to rally behind them.
According to BBC Sport, Morton have collected one point from their opening eight league games and sit three points behind second-bottom Queen's Park. Murray won four of his 29 matches in charge. The BBC also reported that difficulties affecting one of the club's sponsors have had consequences for Morton's finances and recruitment this season.
Murray's departure comes less than nine months after Morton announced his appointment on January 2. At that time, the club said he had signed a contract running until June 2027. Miller, who had been leading the team before Murray arrived, was retained as his assistant while also continuing as head of youth and emerging talent, a position he had held since summer 2025.
The appointment announcement outlined Murray's previous management experience at Dumbarton, St Mirren, Airdrieonians and Raith Rovers, as well as a spell as an assistant with Norwegian club Asker. His Raith tenure included a second-place Championship finish in 2023-24. Before coaching, Murray played for Hibernian, Rangers and Norwich City and earned six Scotland caps, according to Morton's account of his career.
In announcing the departures, Morton's board thanked Murray and Orr for their work and professionalism and acknowledged supporters' disappointment. It said the coming weeks were important for the club and appealed for backing for the players and interim coaches. The statement specifically encouraged fans to attend the Raith match and said further information would follow, leaving O'Halloran and Miller responsible for the immediate transition.
