Morgan Rogers reflects on loan setbacks before record Chelsea move
Morgan Rogers has described how difficult loan spells changed his approach to professional football, with BBC Sport reporting that the Chelsea forward once questioned whether he would establish himself at senior level. He said those experiences taught him to concentrate on what he could control.
Watch the highlights:
BBC's report, published on Monday, draws on a recent interview with Chelsea's club channel and accounts from people involved in his development. At Bournemouth, Rogers made only three starts and scored once. Former scout Des Taylor said the club viewed him as a number 10, but that role did not fit the team's setup.
A subsequent Blackpool loan brought further disruption. Michael Appleton, who had also coached Rogers at Lincoln, was dismissed shortly after their reunion. Rogers scored once in 20 appearances as Blackpool were relegated. According to BBC Sport, family and friends helped keep him grounded while other young players advanced more quickly.
The contrast with his eventual move to Stamford Bridge is considerable. Sky Sports reported in July that Chelsea completed a £117m deal with Aston Villa and gave Rogers a seven-year contract. The fee surpassed the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier that summer, making Rogers the most expensive British player at the time.
Chelsea's announcement confirmed a contract running until 2033 and set out the achievements behind the signing. The club credited Rogers with a combined 40 goals and assists in 85 Premier League appearances for Villa, where he helped secure a top-four finish and a Europa League title. It also recorded 22 England caps by his arrival, following a senior international debut in November 2024.
In comments reported by Sky Sports when the transfer was completed, Rogers identified discussions with Xabi Alonso as an important part of his decision. He said the manager's approach suited how he wanted to play. The move also reunited him with Cole Palmer, whom he had known through England's youth teams and Manchester City, giving the next stage of his career a familiar connection.
