Montpellier rally past Bath as Leinster open Champions Cup with seven tries
Montpellier beat Bath 32-14 at The Rec on Saturday, scoring all 22 points of the second half to win their Champions Cup Pool Four opener. BBC Sport reported that Bath's defeat followed opening losses for Sale, Bristol and Saracens, leaving four English clubs beaten on the same day after Gloucester had drawn with Bordeaux on Friday.
Watch the highlights:
Bath led 14-10 at the interval through tries from Ollie Lawrence and Arthur Green, both converted by Finn Russell. Stuart Hogg had opened Montpellier's account, with Adam Hastings adding a penalty before the break. Bath also had a Max Ojomoh effort disallowed for a knock-on during the first half.
The match turned after Joe Cokanasiga failed to gather a pass with a scoring chance available. Donovan Taofifenua crossed twice, his second try coming from an interception of Russell's pass near halfway. A Josh Bayliss score was ruled out before Alex Becognee added Montpellier's final try. Bath still have pool matches against Cardiff, Bulls and Stade Francais.
In Pool One, Leinster also recovered from a half-time deficit, beating Clermont 48-23 at Stade Marcel-Michelin. According to BBC Sport's separate match report, the visitors finished with seven tries and a bonus point. Their opening European assignment came after another runners-up finish in May, when they lost a final for the fifth time in eight seasons.
Tadhg Furlong and Dan Sheehan scored before the interval, but Joris Jurand's try and Harry Plummer's kicking gave Clermont a 16-15 advantage. Sam Prendergast then put Leinster ahead within two minutes of the restart. He broke through, kicked to Jimmy O'Brien and received the return pass to finish under the posts, part of a personal contribution of 16 points.
Leinster extended their lead through a penalty try and Sheehan's second score. Mathys Belaubre replied for Clermont, before Jack Conan and Tommy O'Brien added late tries for the visitors. BBC Sport also reported that Conan left the stadium with his arm in a sling. The report did not establish the nature or severity of any injury.
