Monaco Retain Balogun and Camara After Deadline-Day Deals Collapse

Monaco retained Folarin Balogun and Lamine Camara after separate deadline-day transfers failed to go through, leaving two important players with the Ligue 1 leaders. Reporting by Get French Football News, published by The Guardian, said Balogun chose to remain at Monaco rather than join Everton despite the clubs having reached an agreement.

Balogun had been Monaco's leading scorer last season, but the club had planned for his departure. Matthis Abline arrived from Nantes at the beginning of the transfer window as a replacement, and chief executive Thiago Scuro said preparations had initially proceeded as intended. Balogun's decision to stay then affected Monaco's other business.

Monaco also agreed to sell midfielder Camara to Chelsea before withdrawing from the deal. The Guardian reported that Monaco had accepted Chelsea's offer after making commitments to French football's financial regulator, the DNCG, to lower the wage bill and generate substantial income from player sales. The French transfer window had closed by the time an agreement was reached, preventing Monaco from securing their intended replacement.

That replacement was Érik Lira, but the move was no longer considered viable, in part because Balogun's planned exit had not freed a non-European Union squad place. Scuro later acknowledged that Monaco would have to find different solutions. Head coach Filipe Luís said the resulting squad was unbalanced, with too many centre-forwards, insufficient midfield cover and no recognised right-winger following Maghnes Akliouche's transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.

The unresolved transfer business has not interrupted Monaco's start on the field. Luís's team came from behind to win 2-1 at PSG, with Nazinho and Stanis Idumbo scoring. Camara delivered a strong second-half performance despite the failed Chelsea move. Monaco are the only club to have won their opening three Ligue 1 matches, collecting nine points and establishing a seven-point advantage over PSG.

Monaco have also won their first five fixtures in all competitions and scored 12 goals while Balogun has been unavailable. The striker is expected to return soon, according to the report. Camara, a 22-year-old Senegal international, has been one of Monaco's leading performers at the start of the season, giving the club immediate sporting strength even as the financial consequences of keeping both players remain unresolved.
